Khalid Mason & Sara Mason

📍 Ford Fiesta – Class C

For Khalid and Sara Mason, Rally Taumarunui is more than just another event—it's a chance for a mother and son to share the sport they both love.

Although they're competing together today, their rally journeys couldn't have started more differently.

For Sara, it all began with a PlayStation.

"I had no family involvement in motorsport, but after playing Gran Turismo when I was 13, my interest rapidly grew from there. I got my first rally car when I was 14."

Khalid, on the other hand, says rallying was something he was simply born into.

"It was forced upon me as a baby! Mum competed in Rally Australia when she was almost three months pregnant with me. I've spent years on the sidelines as Mum and Dad's biggest supporter, looking forward to the day I could compete myself."

Both have plenty to be proud of.

For Sara, it's not just the victories that stand out.

"I'm proud of all the wins, but even more proud of the adversity we overcame over so many years of competing. Rallying can be a tough mistress, and I'm proud of the perseverance and determination it has taken along the way."

For Khalid, his proudest achievement so far was winning his very first event outright at just 14 years old, taking victory at the Prenters Gravel Autocross.

Of course, rallying has also provided plenty of laughs.

Sara recalls jokingly asking her husband Richard for an annulment after a particularly big jump at Rally Otago—a moment that has since been viewed more than a million times on YouTube!

Khalid's favourite memory?

"Making Dad scream while he was sitting in the passenger seat!"

So why Rally Taumarunui?

Sara's answer is short and to the point.

"My son made me." 😄

Khalid is looking forward to tackling the famous King Country roads as part of his North Island Rally Series campaign.

"The roads look mint, and I think they'll really suit the Fiesta."

Away from rallying, Khalid is also an accomplished sportsman, having represented Wairarapa in hockey, tennis and football.

Together, this mother-and-son crew will be one of the many family stories that make Rally Taumarunui so special.

Please join us in welcoming Khalid and Sara to Rally Taumarunui, and be sure to give them a wave when you see the Ford Fiesta out on the stages! 👋🏁
