For Mike Goldsbury and Mathew Harris, Rally Taumarunui is all about embracing the challenge and enjoying everything grassroots rallying has to offer.

After competing at Rally Waitomo earlier this year, Mike knew he wanted to experience another event built around the same simple formula.

"I enjoyed the recent Waitomo Rally and Taumarunui looks like a similar concept—a one-day event with an easy start, service and finish, meaning we won't need a technical service crew."

But they're adding an extra challenge of their own.

Having enjoyed the no-notes format at Waitomo, Mike has decided to tackle Rally Taumarunui without pace notes, relying purely on what he can see ahead as he navigates the legendary King Country roads.

"We're looking forward to the challenge of driving blind on unfamiliar roads."

Alongside Mike is local competitor Mathew Harris, who many rally crews will already recognise.

Matt has spent years lending a hand to fellow competitors behind the scenes, and after recently earning his rally licence, Rally Taumarunui will be a special occasion as he competes in his very first rally—right here at his home event.

Together they'll line up in their Toyota Corolla DX with a refreshingly simple approach to the weekend.

"Our plan is to have fun, do some big skids and get to the finish for a cold beer or two."
